I borrowed this log book from John Calhoun. This 8¼" x 11" wirebound book has green front and unbleached back cardboard covers and no external text. 17-18 April 2014. Did a 23 mile day to get here from just outside Heflin. Spent the night. Now to Cheaha State Park the in-laws. Wedding, etcetera. Glad to get some time in these woods. Raining as I'm heading out.

Hiked in from Cheha Trailhea yesterday. The two miles in was tougher than expected for 9 year old Thomas' first outing with "real" backpack. He was glad to see shelte & said that now he understands what it means to be a "weary traveller." Had the shelter to ourselves. No other hikers & no mice. Deer outside the shelter for at least an hour. Must have been a buck by the way it stomped & blew whenever I moved. Great shelter. Love the timber framing. Nice name & elevation plaque. Would like to see the age / year of construction somewhere. I guess I could find the construction year online but it would bve nice to have it on the structure. I have looked but cannot find. After more looking, I can make out a "94" and a "95" carved into the NE front post. I'm guessing that is right. I thru hiked the AT in '94, but there were no shelters on the Pinhoti when I hiked it in earlier 90s or late 80s. As I have been pacing around here this morning eating my oatmeal, I realized it was 20 years ago this week that I started at Springer Mountain. I have not slept / been in a trail shelter since that year, but now I'm sharing this great shelter with my 9 year old son. He loves it. We will be back - definiely bring the little brother next trip. Big THANKS to Marion, John, Blister Bob, Larry, & other maintainers. Great Job! Many Thanks!

This is my first time actually hiking anywhere, and these two miles were tougher than expected! We started at the Pinhoti Trailhead and worked our way here to stay the night. It started pourng rain halfway here, but it was still a fun & beautiful hike. We gathered a lot of firewood and made a large fire, but there is extra so enjoy it! My boyfriend has made this hike before (2 February 2014) and made it sound easier (They always do!!☺ -Alf) than it was! We still had a great time together. PS If the wood is still good, it's to the left if you're in the shelter.

We survived the night after being ransacked by coyotes and raccoons. One of our members broke her back on a rock after falling out of her hammock. Arrive late on 28 August 2014, stayed at the hunter's camp. Started 07:30, 29 August 2014 Cave Creek Trailhead. Stop for snack. Took to Morgans Cascade Pass CR24. Arrived there around 3:00 (15:00). Did some fishing with PVC pocket diy kit as seen on youtube. Caught 3 fairly good size perch. Headed by over CR24 to friendship campsite. Had dinner and lots of water! Started back 30 August 2014 , arrived at 3:00 (15:00) at shelter. Got caught in the rain "Loved it, cool down" Drank more water. Stream a little low but still has water. Should be leaving 31 August 2014. Headed back to car and stay at Lake Chinnabee (Not sure if correct name.) Going to do some more fishing. Will leave 1 September 2014 back to Ozark, Al.

Started 8 October 2014 from Jacksonville, Florida. 518 miles on Florida Trail, then up through Alabama to here. Connecting to Geargia Pinhoti & Benton MacKaye Trail to link up to the AT around the 10th of January. ~~~~~~~~~~

Monday. Planned a hike from Bull's Gap to Cave Springs. The dog we brought with us needs tougher paws. We do too. We started our trip to Cheaha → Sweetwater Lake. 8 days, hopefully lost. There were a few large trees on the trail up here. This shelter is trashed out currently. We will take what we can. "Without dark, there is no light."

Hiking the "Southern Appalachian Trail." Started down in Florida. Feels like the first real trail shelter. (Florida: a floor and a roof does not a shelter make, especially with your torrential rain & wind.) Anyway, love Blue Mountain Shelter, feels like it belongs in the landscape & loving the Pinhoti Trail so far. Sorry I have to be back to work at the end of the month. Always happy in the Mountains.

Day 182. 11:37am. It's been a long, arduous winter. Food reserves are low. We're down to half rations. The men have resorted to foraging... We lost another man last night to the she-deer. As we huddle around our small fire at night, we can hear them stalking in the shadows just beyond the reach of the life giving fire. We hear their haevy breath. We see the soft glow of the tender flames reflecting off their dead eyes. Only six men left now. Pray that the weather holds out. Pray that the stars do not become lost to us. They are our only guide now. May God be with us all.

Monty, Jack, & Savannah stopped here to escape the night ghost of Cheaha Restaurant. Sometimes she's a ghost, sometimes she's a witch. Sometimes she likes to cut off the toes of the last people in her buffet. After some delicious pudding from the restaurant she turns up. She turns up on banana puddin'... That's how she got the name NILLA WAFER WITCH. She chased us here hollering "Y'all should taste my pudding!" At a certain point she seemed as though she couldn't cross and pursue us further. We could faintly hear one last warning. "Puddin!! Puddin!! Puddin! Eat it, or I'm Puddin you in a grave!" She cackled as she held on to her buffet broom. We ran down the trail and looked into the sky. The buffet broom was above us! She was flying by to drop pudding on us. Not any normal chocolate or vanilla, but witch puddin', full of frog's eyes haw ~~ ones, and and witches love, which is no love ~~ all. Poor Savannah fell for the trick ~~~ ate the puddin!!! Jack ~~~ bones into 2 ~tract ~~~~~~ e is known to ~~~~~~~~~~~

Pretty shelter. We are on a southbound thru hikeof the Pinhoti. If you are going north, lots of poison ivy. I filled up on water at lunch, haven't seen any since. Have not seen any ghosts, bears, jaguars, or such. Did see a huge alligator in the stream. Ifthey tray to bite you, just grab them by the tongue. (Works on bears too!) I wish people would quit packing out their trash. Try to let it accumulate for the rats! Please. PS Notice the ra ~~ up there. It has been made from ch ~~~ t paper. Gross. I use natural ~~~ "~~" peice which I ~~~~ Ass ~~~~~~~~~~~~

My name is Joe. Me and my very beaytiful girlfriend spent the night here. We hiked down from Bald Rock to Pinhoti. I remember my first hiking trip on the Pinhoti. Me, Zach, Andy & Corey started at Adams Gap and hiked here. If you are heading from here continuing towards Adams Gap I'll give you a fair warning. There is not much drinkable water after you cross the road, so be prepared. I'm leaving behind two cans of Campbell's Chunky "Spicy Chicen Quesadilla" soup and bottles of Deer Park Spring Water. My girlfriend and I have really enjoyed our stay. I love her very much. She is "Ms Pinhoti." Ha Ha. Love the Preacher. PS "Watch ~~~ Top Knot!" 13-15 November 2015. Great shelter for the weekend. Feels good to get away from school work. Drove from Tuscaloosa, Al. Got a very late start on Friday, and a flat tire on the way didn't help! Got to the Cheaha Trailhead parking lot right at dusk. 2 miles to the shelter was quite the adventure in the dark! Lost the trail several times, and what a relief it was coming across the shelter! Came with my roommate Blaine. First hike together this semester! Temps dropped into the low 30s at night, glad to be out of the wind. Genuine ~~ e out in the wilderness. Sure beats drinking ~~~ the strip!

13-15 November 2015. Travelled from Tuscaloosa, Al with my buddy Tom. Great escape from school and football / society. Got here 13 November as the sun was going down. Hiked 2 miles in the dark with Tom and finally found BMS! Immediate;y started a fire and ate dinner. Temperature was in the 30s, bundled up in the loft. 14 November. Woke up to a cold, crisp morning! Beautiful day, started a fire and relaxed in my eno! Built a bow and arrow, I'll let you know how it ~~ ... doesn't work, need to find a new pie ~~~d. Heading to the top of the mountain to ~~~ and get a good view! The peple below came ~~ were trail maintenance. Just ate lunch with Tom at Bald Rock. Great View! Just got back and the trail maintenance decided to sign under my unfinished entry. LOL. Starting another fire, getting ready for dinner. Made dinner over the fire. Rice, tuna, carrots. Finished off with dessert: Jerky & Cheese. Late night snack two Jolly Ranchers!! Going to bed, waking up, and heading back home. Great weekend escape! Signing off.

Hiked 9 miles in the rain and hung out at the state park store for a while, and dried my things. Beautiful trail, althought haven't seen too many people on the trail (Actually, none.)... Sorry out of order but this page was not written on. Started at High Falls Trailhead and now here it's 4pm. Did this in 2 days. Getting my survivorman on, yeah!!! Built a fire using a flint bar & striker. Loving it. Looking forward to doing yoga in the morning and getting to Cr24 in Oxford. Beware of bumblebees. They are a little curious at first. Love this shelter. Planning a 4S hike in AT by July tte first getting a taste of it. Now love it. It's awesome and so is NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC November 2014 edition on parasites. Check it out and check out widespread panic's music. Team Panic.
