We get paid with a smile and a thank you! Hike from Sylacauga or Flagg Mountain to Maine or Newfoundland and beyond. I borrowed this log book from John Calhoun. This 7½" x 10" stitched book has white and black cardboard covers. There is one somewhat loose page.

Hey! Me and my fiancé hiked in around 6:00. We started at Pinhoti Trailhead. It was a long hard hike! But Beautiful. We hike back tomorrow. This is my very 1st time out here. It's kinda scary because you never know what's going to happen. But isn't that the whole point? Anyways I hope you enjoy your hike & stay. Wow! She took up half the page. Haha. Yes, this is her first trip hiking AND her first time camping! I planned this trip only 3 days in advance. You know why? (She forgot to mention this.) Last night, under the moon, I asked her to marry me! Obviously, she said yes! I wanted her to feel the peace that hiking and camping can bring. And I think she finally understands what I mean. The moral of the story? Always let your heart guide you.

So by the time we got to the main highway we had about had it with each other. So she had the nerve to call her ex-boyfriend to pick her up and I haven't heard from here since. I'm so sad. Father and son hike over the long weekend. Started at the trailhead with a goal of getting to here for the night. Had to stop short as unforecasted rain caused an early nightfall. Note: If looking for water & the source on the map is dry, follow it downhill until you find some. Chances are it has seeped down. Have a great hike. Pack out your trash & leave no trace. And if you get the chance, thank some of the trail volunteers that maintained it. Time outdoors is time well spent.

Stayed the night here. So hot! Had to pitch tent just to catch a little breeze. Hiked up to Bald Rock Lodge yesterday for the chili cookoff. Free Food is always a plus on the trail. I have been hiking various sections of the Pinhoti the last few weekends. Done Adams Gap to Clairmont Gap SOBO (meh), Adams Gap NOBO to Little Caney Head (very difficult, but spectacular views everywhere). Porter Gap westward to the lake, stagnant water & mosquitos everywhere. Also did a little bit of Chinnabee and stayed at Cheaha Shelter a couple of days ago. Very nice view from there. Very difficult hiking this time of year because of the lack of water everywhere. Have to carry 6 or 7 liters every day. All creeks and water falls are dry. Headed farther north, maybe better luck there. Happy Trails.

Hello all! Just three medical students here, who got lost a couple hours before sunset but happened to stumble upon the delightful Blue Mountain Shelter! (Peter, we are also sorry. If she treats you like that, she doesn't deserve you and your awesome weekend getaway ideas.) A word to the wise... Consult a map, check your phone, etc, before walking 3½ miles the opposite direction. ☺ Regardless, we are having a wonderful time!! Good luck everyone during your travels! Nature heals.

I was walking through the woods for a crisp morning workout when I heard heavy steps behind me. Wheeling around I caught sight of the local Bigfoot on the trail. He was wearing a Wounded Warrior Project shirt and had his tactical pack on his back. He showed me where to find this shelter and vanished back into the woods. What a guy! Haha!

Wuzz up!!! So my birthday was the 20th and my beautiful girlfriend planned this fun hike for me & her. We are camping tonight and headed back tomorrow! Been a blast so far watching her trip & fall!!! I love her soooo much and couldn't have asked for a better birthday present! PS She is peeing in the woods right now and said it is the "hardest part of hiking." Brooke: So this trip has been a blast. Bradley and I have been laughing the whole way. It's exciting and our very first adventure together. I overpacked, so in the future - note to self - DO NOT overpack! Bradley is now known as the whistle man and hawk eye. Overall, a great trip.

Hello, We started at US431 Trailhead on Sunday. We hiked 5.8 miles to friendship Campsite. We set up camp, ate dinner, and slept. (It was a cold night!) We woke up Monday morning, packed up camp, and started on our trek. We hiked 9.6 miles to Blue Mountain Shelter. This shelter is super nice and provided a warm night for us. We are hiking to Cheaha Trailhead, which will finish our journey.

Beautiful day here in ole 'dega today. Overcast, high around 54°, breezy, and no rain. I'm just out for the night and I'll head back home tomorrow. But I was able to get to Blue Mountain rather early today, which gave me plenty of time to settle in. The burn ban ended earlier this week so I managed to collect quite a it of wood for a very cozy fire. There is a lot of leftover wood for whoever is next, as well as a bundle of fat wood I put in the corner of the shelter. (You're welcome. 😉) I feel spoiled because I have a couple fire rocks in the bottom of my sleeping bag keeping me nice and toasty. ☺ Tonight will be the third time I'm camped completely alone. The isolation and disconnect with everything not presently happening has felt really good. It has given me time to disect and digest my problems. And that's all I can ask for. Beathing in this cool air and hearing nothing but nature has reminded me of a Kurt Vonnegut quote I'm quite fond of: "If this isn't nice, what is?" I hope you enjoy your trip and find your own slice of heaven in these woods.

Born and raised in White Plains Alabama. Visiting family for the first time in 5 years! I'm very excited to be on the trail and visiting this shelter. It's been over 10 years since I have been here & I've never camped here. That's a shame because it's such a great shelter! I am doing my dream hike from when I was a boy. Hike from Cheaha Mountain to my old homeplace, just a quarter mile off the Pinhoti. Got a late start so I'm going to walk a few more miles so I can make it to Christmas at the house on Saturday. Hopefully one day I'll have the privledge to camp here. Merry Christmas.

We are out from Eugene, Oregon visiting family over Christmas. Yesterday was 76°, Sunny & Beautiful. Today is 55° and foggy. Still love these woods rain or shine. My first time to the shelter but Zane stayed here when he was 17. Great little shelter. Hope to come back and stay sometime.

I was out hiking early in the morning from Bald Rock. The sky was gorgeous as the sun rose. An overcast has rolled in. All you can hear is perfect silence and water dripping from the trees. Back again! Stayed here in late September when it was 90 degrees. Stayed here last night, down to 45°. Quite pleasant evening after the rain yesterday. Started at Cheaha and will do this section (7) and maybe more, if I have time, ie can get a ride back to my Jeep! Hope to do all the Pinhoti sections in Alabama by this time next year.

It is the morning after our campout here and we are headed to the overlook and then home, where Thomas will go back to work as a hot nurse and I will go back to nursing school. We hope everyone had an amazing Christmas this year! We did because we got engaged. ☺ (Thankfully not on Christmas, though, it was a week before.) We hope you enjoy this place as much as we did. Follow our hashtag for our wedding on instagram! #BLUBOUGHORBUST and yes, BLUBAUGH does sound like blue balls. Father and son hiking for spring break. We started at Adams Gap Saturday morning. We had not anticipated the rock fields on the way up. It rained much of Saturday and we were only able to make it to Hernandez before dark set & our water was depleted. We had a dry night. But the rain picked up and the temperature dropped. An ice coating met us the next morning, putting a damper on our plans. We decided to hike to the Blue Mountain Shelter, dry our equipment, and take it easy. This shelter is nice. We hiked the AT last October and this place is much nicer / cleaner. Monday it is back to Adams Gap.

When we reached this shelter after the last two miles of a 12 mile hike, it might as well heve been the Hilton. We camped off the Nubbin Creek trail on 12 March and decided to come out here for our second night. Heading out today & back to Tuscaloosa.

Been camping since Tuesday night and we are headed back tomorrow. It's been a great trip! I love coming here and seeing all of the beautiful trails and views. It was 20°F our first night... (It was our spring break.) But overall, it was a blast seeing some of my friends quietly sneak into their cars for warmth. I am glad I turned my phone off. I feel I have really just started to think it doen't matter. God created this world so magnificently, and it is truly lovely. I hate that I see all these water bottles around on the ground. Dang people (all college students). Still, thank you all for the shelter and the hiking trails. It has been a pleasure. Hopefully this springbreak warms up. Tried to find Bald Rock Point, but went down a trail that led us to a road and Alabama's Highest Point. Don't follow the trail left of Blue Mountain Shelter unless you want a weird, long hike to the highest point in Alabama.

He's a cool guy - Triple Crown Hiker - for those that don't know him. Have had a great hike so far despite the rain. I even got to hike the new section near Flagg - called Terrapin Hill. It still needs some work, bu we have some great volunteers who are taking care of it. On I go to the end of this journey - Jackson Chapel Road in Georgia. (86 miles down, 93 to go *)

We are hiking 70 miles of the Pinhoti! First long journey for both of us. We broke our water filter first time using it and ran out of fuel by day 3 (Still, we are having more fun than Peter... Sorry Peter. (1 September 2016)) Just about to start our 5th and longest hike of the trip! Hope anyone reading this has enjoyed their travels. Happy trails & Roll Tide!

Doing about 24 miles from Adams Gap to County Road 24. Coming up from Adams is by far the hardest hike of the entire length of the Pinhoti but very rewarding with Caney Head "Dragons Backbone", McDills Point & plane crash site! Also did lake trail. It's brutal but you can hike halfway down from top & back to see Chief Cheaha Face on side of mountain. Very cool. I would like to mention 3 of my close friends on this day as I begin my 2018 hiking season! Russell "Mala" Forsyth hiked all over country but best known for doing trail magic all the way to Maine on the AT for about 15 years. "Baltimore Jack" Tarlin - Legendary hiker known worldwide for his incredible character! Also "Otto" Douglas, AT hiker but best known for probably 1000 hours of volunteer trail work all over the country, most extensive work with Tennessee Eastman Corps with Bob Peoples! Those guys are forever in my heart and always on my mind. Much love always buds! This hike gets my little buddy Shane up to 82 miles of the Pinhoti and we conquered Cheaha! I've been out on the trail with Grizzly Greenman and Dova T on a 24 mile hike. We started out at Adams Gap and are goingto CR24. It's been a rough two days. The wind was howling. Blew off Greenmans tent. Me and Dova had to share a tent. Barely made it through the night the next morning. We had a fire the night before but it was gone by morning. Freezing to death with nothing to warm us up. We hiked up Lake View Trail back to the trail crossing. Got some coffee at the store and carried on freezing. A hell of a lot better now! In rallolha we trust Happy Trails!!!

Spring break 2018: My son and I are hiking the Pinhoti from Flagg to 431. Decided to stay the night here because it is such a nice shelter and we have put in some really BIG mileage days to get here. We stayed at McDill's Overlook last night so this is a really short day of rest. We also had a town day in Oxford. Getting off the trail tomorrow at 431 and headed home for Easter. We will finish the Alabama section this summer and eventually catching the Benton MacKaye over to Springer.
