6:30pm. End of day 4. FKT attempt took a major hit today. 31 miles in 13 hours. When I saw the shelter sign, it felt like a donkey kick. It rained all day and the creek crossings were endless, but I kept my head down all day long. 31 miles? Really? I pulled up here for the day rather than spending several more hours slogging to Oakey. I hope a few hours of sleep revives my spirit. It's on the mat, struggling to get up, looking for its mouthpiece. - Birdfoot PS GPS had me at 3mph pace. Anyone else think the databook is off? 18 mile day from Coleman Lake Campground to North Dugger Mountain Shelter. Hiked through much of the Tornado Damage left from Monday's storm, before it had been cleared. Some tough hiking! Lots of blowdowns! Here's to smooth trail ahead. |

Just stopped in doing a "spotty" damage survey for the recent tornado on 19 March 2018 that severely damaged Jacksonville and Southside and Rabbittown plus our trail south of Choccolocco Dam. (It's in OK shape now thanks to the USFS.) Volunteers still needed in Jacksonville area. Have a good hike and be weather aware! | ||||||||||||||||

17:35 Hours. Checking the shelter after an arson started fire on the evening of 11 April 2018 off of Forest Service Road 500 at the bottom of the hill. Fire had already run up the hill before the firefighters could get here to respond. Miraculously, the fire burnt a perfect circle around around the shelter, picnic table, and even the "Land & Water Conservation Fund" sign. Fire was named the "Crooked Bridge Fire" after the bridge just south of here on FS Road 500. (The bridge sits at an almost 90° angle to the road and looks like it was built crooked in relation to general direction of road.) Dozer & hand Line were constructed & the fire was held to about 100 acres. [Thanks for signing the log book too!] |

| Hiked with my two boys to the lake and back. Sad to see the burned up forest, but it made the rest even more beautiful. We stayed in our hammocks for the first time. The moon was bright and the whipoorwills were really singing a chorus. Lots of ticks! Don't forget your bug spray like we did. | ||||||||||||||||
