Starting to smell the finish of a great nobo thru hike. What a gorgeous stretch today from the Rio Grande crossing to here! One of the best days of hiking in along while. I had one of the oddest (and longest of shots) that happened to me along the way. I heard a thump up in the woods. And then another. Next thing I know, a fully mature, gigantic, massive tree starts falling right towards me - and I mean right towards me! I was directly in its fall path. As soon as I realized what was happening (and what was going to happen if I didn't move) I put my caboose in gear and started sprinting down the trail. Luckily nothing hit me, but the closest branch to me once the dust settled was only 15 feet away. Absolutely amazing. What are the odds? Lesson for everyone - look up when picking your campsite. Dead limbs (or huge Oak Trees) do fall sometime or another. What grows up, must fall down. Hike well, ignore the smell - Book Burner |

Trying to see if I have the mental strength to hike the PCT this spring. 19° @ 6am. Mice shredded tp by my head without waking me. Nice shelter. Trail is well maintained & thanks to Solo for great trail guide. Leaving @ 7am for next shelter - about 10 miles. |

Well, I made it in just before dark... Cool shelter, but I have this urge to night hike a few hours more. Taking a break for about ½ hour though... To let my MP3 player's batteries recharge... Gotta have music or audio drama for a quality night hike. Been listening to Elliot Smith and Tenacious D live recordings mostly. Downloaded from Archive.org. Awesome website for music... Legal too!☺ Or I may listen to my audio book of "Walden" by Henry David Thorou (Wrong Spelling I know). Another option is an epidsode of "Radio Detective Story Hour" - a Podcast. Good stuff! By the way, the best detective audio drama is "Black Jack Justice" from Decoderring.com ... Download it. It's awesome. My absolute favorite thing to listen to while hiking is the BBC Audio Drama representation of "The Lord of the Rings". 13 hours long it is! Why am I writing all this?.... Because I'm waiting for the stupid MP3 player to re-charge... hurry up MP3 player! → Hiking wise, this is day #6 and I still haven't seen any other hikers. I miss other hikers. Mr Parkay GA-ME '06 |

Hell Yes! Made good time today! 18,2 miles and here before 5pm. Yeehaw! Beat the rain too! Our pup is very tired and unhappy with us - She passed out immediately upon arrival. We were stoked to see that Mr Parkay signed in on 25 January 2007. We also hiked GA-ME in 2006... But we never met him - We just always read his entries - Now we are here in Alabama, different trail, still reading his entries - Maybe we'll meet someday! 3 mere days of our thru-hike - Then back to Asheville, NC to finish semester - The Vermont Long Trail this summer! L♡ving it! '06, Pinhoti '07 PS Check out www.trailjournals.com under Trickster & What?! The only turkeys we are yet to see on the "Turkey Trail" are ourselves... hmmm |

See Y'all at Trail Dayz in Damascus, VA, or bust! Just got in! Hiked from I20 today. A few miles of I+ say so. This trail is great. The maintainers do a good job and this shelter is very nice also. It's good to see a picnic table. It was good to sit down at a table for dinner. I really did not expect to come through this trail so quick. And it looks like the end is coming just as quickly. I have to see how many miles 'til the end tomorrow so I can call my awesome girlfriend Jessie (I wish she was here, and my dog Moxie also.) and tell her when to meet me. If it's 40 miles I might try to do that in a day. It sounds a little crazy, but I get tranced out. Although I still pay attention to my surroundings. Shout ou to Trickster & what?!? First stop of my week wandering around in the woods. Was not expecting such a nice, secluded shelter. Props to whoever maintains this. Would have been nice to have a fire... But since it's been so dry there's been a ban. I made do with my camp stove and had some pretty decent meals. If any Auburn people see my note, give me an email. None of my friends were hard core enough to go with me on my extended outing. Best wishes. email

Hiked from Lower Shoal Shelter yesterday. A cute little mouse got stuck under my mosquito netting last night. It ran around for a bit 'til I calmed it down, but when I tried to pet him, he tried to chew his way out... So I let him go. Great shelter, my last day of hiking (of 7) is today. Then I'm getting picked up. I'll sure miss the woods, and the critters. Best Wishes |

It's been raining for two days straight, and it doesn't look like dry weather is around the corner. I wanted to go from Porter's Gap to Cave Springs, Georgia, in 6 days, but I wasn't prepared for the jagged boulders of despair that litter most of the trail. So the hiking has been slow... Did 18 miles yesterday, which puts me at 7 miles so far today. After seeing this gorgeous shelter, I may decide to stay the night. It's only 10:00am, so that wouldn't be very efficient. I guess I will take a long break here, eat some lunch, and sweep this puppy out before getting back on the Pinhoti. Maybe my trail name sould be Rainman, because it's supposed to rain the rest of the week, & because I'm retarded for hiking in it.

We're back! We hiked from Adam's Gap. Spent the night just outside of Turnipseed and then hiked all the way to Blue Mountain Shelter. It was a 3 day affair for us. Both nights it was mighty cold, but we made it! It was no doubt the most uplifting, beautiful, and spiritual hike I have ever been on. We plan on returningto the shelter and hiking to Anniston. God Bless us all. ✝

Blessed to have such great weather - 43° tonight, 68° tomorrow. I'm here with my son Brooks 15 / Slip, and nephew 18 Slide, and two thru hikers Thru and her dog. She has thru hiked the PCT, CDT, & AT, where she met the guy who is hiking the Pinhoti with her. He's old enoughto be her dad. I learned a lot talking to them as I will thru hike the AT in 2011! Retired last year at 50. Rock on and Thank You Jesus! We started a couple of days ago in 34° snow, sleet, then rain from Adams Gap, down the Skyway Loop, Lake Trail around Chinnabee, then up to Cheaha Shelter for the night. Next day, to Pinhoti, to here. Tomorrow we will go back down Pinhoti to Cave Creek, Odum Scout, then Pinhoti again to Adams. Oh yeah, my knees can't wait to hike DOWN the Stairway to Heaven! Did I mention this shelter is supposed to be haunted! I will Google the story, maybe. My food bag was opened during the night!!! Nothing's missing. "The hike is short, leave no regrets!" "Pack it out" Cover ur shit. BTW - Awesome sunrise from my bag this morning. [I stayed at a shelter with this dude. Cool. Passing Thru - Rocket Man] |

Started at Shoal Creek Ranger Station on Highway 78 Monday (21 April 2010) and stayed last night at Lower Shoal Shelter. This is a very nice shelter, but Lower Shoal is the prettiest shelter on the Pinhoti. I'm from Auburn (just live there, Roll Tide!!) and brought my youngest brother from Olethe, Kansas! Yesterday was his birthday, 41st. Going on to Choccolocco Shelter tomorrow, then out at Pinky Burns Trailhead. Go Light, Go Fast, Go Far... Roll Tide! |

Homebound journey: Key West - Rocky Bottom, South Carolina Thursday. In for the night. Got mixed up on date. Last night at Lower Shoal Shelter I put the 1st? I been in the woods too long. I just love the Pinhoti Trail. Thanks all you trail crew. Good Job. I'm trying to throw out of path "Small stuff." I carry heavy weight poles just for that. Always trying to put something back into the trail. Just think if every hiker would help move the "small stuff" then the trail crew could worry about big blow downs!! Let's do it, Hikers! Love to all the trail folks! Come on up Puff & Huff!! AT04, PCT06, CDT08, FT10: But Pinhoti Best All Overall!!! |

Friday. 11:30pm. Well, after an exciting hike on narrow trail with numerous stream crossings, I am in for the night. These shelters are nifty. If I may make suggestion - Bug Screen... → Would help a great deal for shelters located near water. Sorry to miss Sunset. We've been dodging each others all through Florida and Alabama. Hope to see hime someday. PS I may complain about lack of screen, but really, I know trail work is hard, and shelters are a luxury, so thank you! ☺ Smile! |

Doing from Coleman to Pine Glen today! That puts me all the way to 278 in two weeks doing sections! Gonna try to go from Springer to Piedmont soon! It will be nice to thru-hike for a change! Spent last night at Pine Glen and will go all the way to Choccolocco Creek Shelter tonight and hike over Dugger Mountain tomorrow. I am doing well and on schedule, expecting to finish on Thursday, the 21st, by noon. I've had excellent support and met lots of good people along the way. Went solo this morning, my son and nephew had to return to school, and I am learning to enjoy the solitude.

Dugger Mtn | 18 | October | 2010 | 1 Hiker | John M | Pell City, Al | 9 Days | Pinhoti Trail |
Thru hiking NOBO from Bull Gap to Jackson Chapel Trailhead, approximately 140 miles. I started my hike on 9 October. This is my 9th trail day because I spent one zero day at Cheaha State Park. I have been solo the last two days since I left Pine Glen Campground where I parted company with my son and nephew and enjoyed some really good trail support from some of my firends. Thanks Scott T. I arrived here today at 5:07pm from Choccolocco Creek Shelter. It was a good hike over Dugger Mountain: Pretty clear trail on the ascent, but found a lot of blown down trees that made coming down interesting! I repaired the fire ring by digging it out and building it up with several new rocks. Thanks to whoever left the fire wood; I'll try to pay it forward. It is unusually warm compared to my last night at the watershed; I'm not even wearing socks! It feels almost like a late summer night, nothing like fall. I saw no one on the trail the last two days and that's OK; The solitude has been nice. I will hike ove Oakey Mounatin to the new Chief Ladiga Trail Campground where I will enjoy a good shower and some comfort food from the camp store! As of now, sites rent for $15 per night, and that includes firewood, all right next to Terrapin Creek. Thanks to all the trail maintenance folks who work to make all this possible. Keep up the good work. It's been a good hike thus far and I'm looking forward to the finish. |
