Front External Text Hiker Register Terrapin Hill South Introductory Internal Paragraphs A full printed sheet is taped in the front cover, and is transcribed below: HIKER REGISTER This is the property of the Alabama Hiking Trail Society, Inc. www.hikealabama.org The reasons for this Hiker Register are many. They include: 1. Emergency personnel must know if a hiker passed this point for safety reasons. This may be the only record informing emergency personnel that a hiker passed through this part of the trail. 2. Much of the funding for improvements for the trail comes from Federal and State Cost Share Grant Money allocated annually and contingent upon many hours of Volunteer Labor and USE OF THE TRAIL by the public. It is estimated that only 10% of the hikers who hike the trail will sign the Hiker Register. It's important that the register be signed, placed in the plastic bag, and returned to the register container. 3. Hiker registers are archived and are historical records. You may be surprised to learn that historical figures are hikers and they may be our best allies in preserving, protecting, and improving the trail experience for all. 4. Hiker Registers are the communications link for hikers up and down the trail where and when others have passed this location. 5. Outside the hiking world non-hikers have no idea how many hikers use the trail. Hikers are generally an unseen recreational group. There are no loud noises from motorized equipment, no noisy groups, and little if any disturbance. That's the whole idea! But it's foreign to most others. When Hiker Registers are shown to Federal and State Agency personnel, enormous understanding of how many people are actually using hiking trails in Alabama follows. IF NOBODY KNOWS, WHY WOULD THEY FUND PROTECTION FOR MORE LAND FOR HIKING TRAILS? THEY WON'T. HOW YOU CAN HELP GET MORE HIKING TRAIL BUILT IN ALABAMA 1. Sign the Hiker Register, replace in bag and seal, place in container. 2. Encourage others in your group to sign each Hiker Register along the Trail. 3. Join the Alabama Hiking Trail Society, Inc. (AHTS). AHTS is Alabama's only state wide hiking trail organization dedicated to building a hiking trail from Mobile to Huntsville, the Alabama Trail, and connecting to the Florida National Scenic Trail, the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail, and the Pinhoti National Recreation Trail; and building a connected hiking trail system, the Alabama Hiking Trail System throughout Alabama; and teaching others to care for, improve and educate others in the careful use of the Alabama Hiking Trail System. 4. Tell you Local, State, and Federal Legislators you want hiking trails in your local county, and you want them connected to the Alabama Hiking Trail System, so you can walk anywhere in Alabama off road on a safe footpath. I photographed this 8½x11 log book 3 April 2020. It had plenty of blank pages and was not disintegrating. I left it in the Terrapin South Mailbox for further use.

HAPPY EASTER! Turtle & Thud completing the new section 1 of the Pinhoti southbound. Very much enjoyed, although unsure of mileage. Lots of dogs on road walk, glad to be in the woods. Very much appreciate everyone's hard word to make this happen. Glad we ran into Kent & Angel so we at least had a bit of intel. And my dog Crockett on his first overnight long distance hike.

I went hiking today. This is my first time in Coosa County. I did see some meth people while on my trek here. I was deeply concerned that I would die, but I met my angel turdle ? while in the woods. However, everything is fine.

Still waiting for a new trailname. Flagg Mountain was the beginning of Phase 2 of my 3 year, 15,000 mile trek to link the AT, CDT, and PCT into a single, continuous hike. I started in Denver, Colorado. Originally from Eastern North Carolina. Tonight's full moon will be the third since the beginning of this trek. That is the most reliable way of tracking time. I learn something new nearly every time my foot touches the ground. With every footfall, I love this world, and am the man I am becoming even more. Flagg Mt 8:30am → here 1:55pm. On our way to Kim's Camp beside Mill Creek tonight, and finish at Bull's Gap Sunday. Then Section 1-3: Complete. Pinhoti Outdoor Center shuttle thumbs up. Great ride and history of the area from Nathan. Currently 87° Ughh. Too warm. Stopped for lunch at Caperton's store.
